Can I Make My Softphone Ring Out Loud Through My Speakers While The Call Goes To My Headset?

If you want your ringtone to ring through the speakers of your pc and the call audio to go through your headset, this article is for you.

Changing the Settings in Windows 10:

1. Right click on the speaker in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen and select "Sounds".
2. Go to the "Playback" tab.
3. Right click on the speakers of the computer and set them as "Default device".
   1. This should automatically set your headset as default communications device. If it does not, right click on the headset and select "Set as default communications device".
   2. You sound settings should look like the picture below. The speakers should have a green checkmark next to it, and the headset should have a green phone next to it.
4. Click "Ok"

Changing the Settings in Windows 11:

1. Right click on the speaker in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen and select "Sound Settings".
2. Scroll down to the "Advanced section" and select "More sound settings".
3. Go to the "Playback" tab.
4. Right click on the speakers of the computer and set them as "Default device".
   1. This should automatically set your headset as default communications device. If it does not, right click on the headset and select "Set as default communications device".
   2. You sound settings should look like the picture above. The speakers should have a green checkmark next to it, and the headset should have a green phone next to it.
5. Click "Ok"

Note: With this set up all media audio like the ring tones, notifications, Spotify, YouTube etc. will come through the speakers of your computer. All call audio from downloaded softphones like Teams, Zoom, RingCentral etc. will come through the headset.

Changing the settings in your softphone:

Sometimes after checking the Windows settings, we may need to check the softphone settings as well.

1. If your softphone settings have an option to select "Ringer" or "Ringtone" make sure we select the computer speakers which will likely come up as "Speaker/Headphones (Realtek...)".
   1. Softphones like RingCentral, Cisco IP Communicator, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom all have this option!
