Will Teams/Zoom Automatically Switch to a new Headset When Plugged In?

Updated by on Mar 1, 2024

Typically, if you plug a USB headset into a PC, the settings in the computer will automatically change to the headset. So, once you turn the headset on, all sounds in the computer will go through the headset :)

There are occasions where this may not happen, either do to a small glitch or if you already have a USB headset plugged in.

General PC Settings

For Windows, you can easily change your computer sound settings using the following articles:

Teams/Zoom

As mentioned above, the sound settings may automatically switch to the new headset when you plug it in. However, if you want to have two headsets plugged in so you can switch back and forth, you will need to disable the one you don't want to use.

  • In the type-to-search search section in the bottom left corner of your computer, type in "control panel" and click on the control panel app
  • Click on "Hardware and sound" then select "sound"
  • In the playback tab, right click on the headset you don't want to use and select "disable"
  • Go to the recording tab and do the same thing, disabling the microphone you don't want to use

Now the computer will ignore the disabled headset, making sure not to confuse your computer and Zoom or Teams. To re-enable the headset, just go back into the sound setting, right click on the disabled headset and select "enable".
