Softphone Mics Cutting Out

Is the microphone audio on your softphone cutting in and out? Try this!

  1. Make sure your computer sound settings are correct. Instructions for Windows 10, Windows 11, and Mac computers are here
  2. Windows 11 tends to have more advanced sound settings, so here are clearer steps to navigate those
  3. If your headset is already the default in your computer's sound settings, next you can check the microphone privacy settings Here are steps for checking Windows 11 microphone privacy settings
  4. If everything looks correct, do a sound recording. Here is how to do a sound recording test on both Windows and Mac computers

If it sounds perfect in the sound recorder (installed on most Windows PCs), then it’s 1 of 2 things:

  1. If you use your softphone through an app, first check that the headset is the default microphone in the app's sound settings, then UNCHECK “Automatically Adjust Microphone Settings." It may say a various of that, but this is almost always the culprit!
  2. If you're using your softphone in Google Chrome, a setting in Chrome might be causing the mic issues. To fix this...
  • Open Google Chrome and go to the 3 dots in the top right
  • Choose “Settings” from the drop-down menu on the right side of the screen.

  • Then go to the top left of the screen and click the blue lines that say “Privacy and security”
  • In the middle screen, select "Site settings", then select "Microphone"

  • Make sure the headset is set up on the dropdown menu at the top
  • Then, select "Sites can ask to use your microphone"
  • Make sure any sites you need to use the headset with are not in the "not allowed to use your microphone" list

That’s it! You’re done! WHEW!
